Author Topic: Heat Signature: A new game from the creator of Gunpoint! [RELEASED!]  (Read 6287 times)

Heat Signature is what you get when Hotline Miami meets space.

In Heat Signature, you play as a mercenary who sneaks onto ships and kills everything they see. You start off with just you, your pod, and one friendly space station, in a big randomly generated nebula full of space stations owned by four warring factions. You can immediately go out and look for random ships to raid, or you can pick up missions that reward you with money on completion. Types of missions include target assassination, target kidnapping, cargo thieving, and more.

Control the Galaxy
Each mission you complete contributes to your effort to liberate other space stations for your own use. Each mission you complete adds points to a meter; once that meter fills, you can choose one neighboring space station to liberate. The station becomes a home base and creates a trade route between your current stations and the new one (this affects ship spawns). The space stations act as your upgrade tree. Every station you liberate has an item tied to it, and liberating said station adds that item to your shops for your current and future characters.

Become a Legend (Or die trying)
Heat Signature has a semi-permadeath mechanic. When you die, you lose your character and immediately take control of a new one at your home station. Every character has different starting items, and you can have 4 different characters at one time. Each character has his or her own storage, which is lost upon death. The only thing kept between characters are your unlocked items and liberated stations. If at any point you get tired of a character, you can retire him/her and get a new one.
Every character has their own personal mission, as well. It takes some time and money to gain access to it, and it can be one of the hardest missions in the game. If you complete that mission, your character will become a legend. When you retire a legend, you can choose some of their items to become legendary items, which will be added to the loot drop table in your game. Your Steam friends can find your legendary items, too!

ABOUT THIS GAME

Break into spaceships!
Fly your pod up to any spaceship in the galaxy and dock with its airlock to sneak inside. From there, you've got to sneak up on the crew, outshoot them in slowmo gunfights, or outthink them with clever gadgets. Take missions to steal loot, assassinate VIPs, or rescue friends.

Take your time!
Get out of impossible situations by pausing at any time and taking as long as you need to figure out a clever plan. You have a wide range of gadgets with clever uses, and you can switch, aim and fire them with no time pressure at all, letting you pull off ridiculously cool tricks without needing twitch skills.

Liberate the galaxy!
All your missions get you closer to liberating new space stations from the empires that control them, and this unlocks new gadgets to buy in your shops, and special challenge characters to play.

Lots more features!

I'm not making GIFs for all these!

I'm not made of GIFs!

I'm not some kind of GIF-golem!

Emergent gameplay!

Use gadgets like teleporters, stealth shields and subverters to invent your own solutions to tricky situations.

Galactic zoom!
Zoom smoothly from a view of the whole galaxy down to your character sneaking up on guards inside the spaceship you're boarding.

Choose your difficulty!
You choose each mission, ranging from trivially easy to nightmarishly hard. There's also a practice mode where you can try items and tactics with no consequences and instant-restart.

Randomly generated missions!
Each one picks a random combination of guard kit, ship layout, and complications like space battles.

Each life is a new character!
Choose between randomly generated characters with different starting kit, and when you die, play as someone new in the same galaxy.

Personal missions!
Every character has one grand heist to work towards: rescue their brother, steal their gun back, get revenge on their partner's killer.

Modular destruction!
Blow up any part of a ship with breach grenades or fuel barrels. Rip a ship in half. Get sucked into space by the vacuum.

Rescue your friends' characters!
If someone on your friends list gets their character captured, and they aren't able to rescue them, maybe you can! You'll sometimes get a character whose personal goal is to rescue a friend's character. If you manage it, you unlock your friend's character to play as! They don't get it back. They had their chance. It's yours now.

Find your friends' items!
When you retire an accomplished character, you can choose one item to pass on. You get to name it, and both your Steam friends and your own future characters have a chance to find these as loot. Equally, you'll come across items your friends have named.

What Heat Signature is not:
We don't want you to buy Heat Signature if it's not for you. We'd always rather have a happy non-customer than an unhappy customer. So here's what it isn't:

  • It's not story-driven: there's a backstory to this place and a few conversations with characters, but there's not a story that develops as you play. It's much more about the stories you generate by playing, about how you got out of impossible situation X or pulled off crazy stunt Y.
  • There aren't other careers: You can't mine asteroids. You can't build ships. You can't recruit a crew. You're an infiltrator, you break into spaceships for a living, it's all about that.
  • There are no planets: The whole game takes place in this nebula full of space stations. You can dock at any friendly station and board any hostile ship, but it's not a space exploration game.
  • It's not multiplayer: The friends features mentioned above are fun but they're just sharing content, it's not multiplayer at all and you're never in the same world together.
There are cool games about all those things. This is a cool game about something else!

This game has gotten some good reviews on a couple sites, and NerdCubed covered it a while back, but I don't want this to fly under anyone's radar. It's a fantastic game.

Heat Signature Launch Celebrations!
Heat Signature currently has a gif/video contest and an exclusive launch week game item.
The Everything Gun can be found in a ship with a flashing light. Raid the ship, collect the item, and you'll be able to find it randomly in any ship for the rest of time. Miss out, and you'll never see the item again it might pop up sometime in the future if the devs feel like it.
Update: The Everything Gun will now be added to your item drop pool, whether you stole it or not, as long as you play the game before Oct. 5th.
The gif/video contest will allow your character to be on a trading card! Send a video of a crazy moment in your game to the devs, and if they like your clip, your character could be one of the game's steam trading cards.

that looks pretty cool
neat way for items to be recycled into new playthroughs as well

I've been waiting for this game for quite some time........

I feel like I've seen this game before somewhere, not sure where. Looks pretty cool tho

I finally completed my first personal mission.

I wrote a big story here at first but i scrapped it. tl;dr, i blew up my own entrance and got my cargo with just a second to spare.

cool, it's on humble bundle's store as well
so it's 19% off for me instead of 10%
time to shoot some space battles, been doing too much redstoning on minecraft

Damn I forgot about the monthly bundle discount. Oh well though, they deserve the money.

Sat down to play it for a bit, ended up being two hours
Really fun game so far, getting a new item feels amazing
Currently running around with a special hammer and a wrench

Also how do shields work? Is it one hit to break them, second hits the target?

shields deflect all projectiles and damage, and as far as i know they can't be broken. the only thing that can take down a shield are the crash beams.

oh rip
haven't stumbled across one of those yet

you're thinking of emergency shields then
emergency shields only go up if the user sees a body or if an alarm is raised

Ive been waiting for this game for so long I actually forgot about it.

yeah, the shielded guards are a pain right now
I thought it would only put up the shields when they started to attack, not at first sight
so I lunged to smack a guards face but his shields were instantly up, and his bullets kind of hurt because he wasn't dead

Alright, slipstreams are OP. Since it takes a second or more for someone to notice you when they see you, you can activate slipstream and run through a room full of guards without anyone seeing you and raising an alarm. It work especially well for stealing key cards.

I'll summarize the game in a few words: fun at first, repetitive in an hour. It's definitely fun to figure out unique ways to clear out ships or reach your objective without being thrown out the airlock and dying, but that's all there is to the game. After an hour of swapping places with enemies, dodging bullets and blowing up ships with other ships you just swapped and dodged bullets in, you begin to realize how little features there actually are in the game.

Hotline Miami was definitely more fun. All the levels in Hotline Miami are pre-designed and therefore they have a perfect increase in difficulty that is manageable. Heat Signature's idea of 'difficulty' is putting extra enemies with higher shields and a few more locked doors. There's a severe lack of creativity and features that I notice in this game and I hope they fix it. For now, save that 14.99 for something better.

If you haven't bought gunpoint, do it now, because in my opinion it has more features and more creativity involved than this game.
