why would this not work in the US? how is taking military contracts and making some shotguns and hunting rifles on the side for civilian purchase after a safety test and mental evaluation not sufficient?
Well, let's talk about fully auto weapons
Fully auto weapons, and parts used to convert semi-autos to fully-autos, manufactured after....sometime in 1986, I forget the exact date....are outright banned for civilian trade. So...that parts already been done.
Now, sure, we still have existing stock manufactured before the previously mentioned date. You can freely trade (with the right permits, federal registration, and taxes) but with
zero input of new supply, the market-value for a civilian-ownable, fully automatic,
legal firearm has risen to ~$20-30k, where a semi-auto model could be had for <$1k. How do you remove this stock from the market? Do you just tell everyone "we're taking several tens of thousands of dollars of stuff from you, tough stuff, you get nothing" ? I can't see any case how I would support something like that. Does the government pay everyone 20-30k a pop for their existing full auto weapons? I don't see many people supporting that.
This will never happen because when poor people become educated they will get jobs and stop voting liberal.
See, I like what you were saying before, but you don't make yourself look good when you ruin it with a "hurr liberals r dum" ad hominem jab
