The actual reason the pictures look different is because they're taken at different altitudes with different wide angle lenses. The ISS for example is actually really close to the earth, so to get the entire globe in view you have use a fisheye lens, which leads to a distorted picture like the "2012" image in OP.

Interesting video. I always thought the fish lens was to blame for people seeing the "curvature" of the earth. One video I saw in particular shows a man at the beach, using his camera to zoom in and out on the water to a far out boat: showing that there is no curvature, but simple a vanishing point at which the eye can no longer see past. It's really begs the question: what shape is the earth? Pear-shaped?
