EA has announced that it’s shutting down Visceral Games, the studio best known for developing the Dead Space series of games and Battlefield Hardline. Visceral was in the middle of work on an upcoming Star Wars title, which EA says will live on in some form, with EA Worldwide Studios and EA Vancouver taking over development.

According to EA executive vice president Patrick Söderlund, Visceral’s take on the Star Wars title would have been a “story-based, linear adventure game,” which the company has decided needed to be shifted toward a “broader experience.”

Visceral Games, the studio behind Dead Space and Battlefield Hardline and which was most recently working on a still-unannounced Star Wars game, has been closed down. Electronic Arts vice president Patrick Soderlund confirmed the closure in a statement, in which he also said that the design direction of Visceral's Star Wars project will undergo a "significant change."

"Our Visceral studio has been developing an action-adventure title set in the Star Wars universe," Soderlund writes. "In its current form, it was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game. Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.

gotta make it broader cus nowadays if a game doesn't sell 100 million copies it's a huge flop

will it ever slow down? will we have another video game market crash? even if we do, it's not gonna be a fun time to be a gamer during the crash, that's for sure - yeah, those starfishs at EA will suffer, but so will FROM, and CD Projekt red, and Platinum.

EA sucks, if swbf2 comes out as stuff I'm going to be pissed because the beta was actually not sucky

I didn't find the beta very fun... only interesting part was the flying bit but that felt pretty poorly balanced.

given the business side of things, it is a flop, though the numbers arent that high iirc. the average triple a title takes anywhere between $10 to $30 milllion usd nowadays. ask a game dev goes into the $$$ and player response side of game dev a lot and i highly advise you and anyone else who doesnt know about the numbers behind big games to read his posts
