Author Topic: I need PC suggestions  (Read 1677 times)

My Digital Storm Vanquish 1 (Level 4) died three weeks ago--you might have noticed I stopped posting. The water cooling system leaked and fried the GPU and a few other components, so instead of bothering to identify and replace the damage I'm just getting a new one.

I don't do a lot of extremely demanding gaming. Most grand-strategy games and RPGs. My 3 favorite games are Mount & Blade: Warband, Skyrim, and Crusader Kings 2. Of course, I still want to be able to run pretty much anything (at least at lower settings) so that I can play new games.

Price range is $800 - $2000. Planning to split the price 3-way between myself and each of my parents as a gift (as my 18th birthday is pretty soon).

I'd love to get a Digital Storm PC because of how convienient and nice their PCs have been so far, but it's not a requirement.

Digital Storm is like the best computer manufacturer ever. They sell customized systems so you can get a a standard build and then modify it to upgrade or downgrade it as much as you need to, and they put it all together. They also install loads of drivers and updates before shipping it

It's all pretty overpriced for the parts themselves but you get a lot of additional services and stuff alongside it (along with a binder of computer information and disks for various problems and installs). the cable management is so clean it's genuinely beatiful.

And every time I have a computer problem their support are genuinely amazing. The tech workers they have are brilliant (I think they only have 4 or 5 because I keep getting the same ones). They'll pull up a file with all your pc specs and they can pretty quickly be like "OH YEAH LOOKS LIKE YOUR MOTHERBOARD ISN'T COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 10, LOOKING ONLINE A MAJOR THING PEOPLE ARE SAYING IS THAT IT BREAKS WIFI SUPPORT" and identify the issue. they don't treat you like an idiot unlike microsoft tech support or support for a lot of other companies. also they are hilarious, and really honest. they'll straight up tell you whether or not something is a ripoff (one guy said that if I was planning to order individual parts from them I might as well just buy a new PC, and instead sent me a NewEgg cart with the items I wanted). also they all shared stories about the incompetency of geeksquad which i could personally relate to

(only downside is that it's all a little cringy. I got a receipt that said "THIS COMPUTER SEPERATES YOU FROM THE REST OF HUMANITY!"

If your not doing too much demanding gaming, the GTX 770 GPU should suffice and it's a decent price; I'm able to play Fallout 4 on max settings with it. You can also reduce the overall cost by getting it with a clean HD, and installing the OS yourself

Why not build your own rig at https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ ?

I did end up turning god rays down, I would notice a slight FPS drop with them on max, not to mention they almost literally blind you

that's not building a rig.

Why not actually build a rig, instead of buying a prebuilt? It is much better for your money

I'll make a nice rig for you, give me a second

some notes:
x370 mobo is pretty much a b350 on steroids (see: sli capability). good for upgrades in the future but if you want to shave off some $$$ you can make it a b350.
cpu cooler is a bit on the pricier side because i was trying to find one that was guaranteed to include an am4 bracket.
ram speed is really high because ryzen loves fast ram.
it bugs me that a lot of builds dont factor in the cost of a copy of windows, so i added that in for you.
this is some of the best stuff you can get with a hard budget of $2000. judging from the op you can go much lower specced than this if you want, but this will pretty much max out any game you throw at it.
edit: updated build for a better cpu cooler, different gtx 1080 ti since from what i heard the msi gpu that was there has a pretty crappy cooler

While we're on the subject, does anyone know a good place where I can get a decent server box/desktop meant exclusively for hosting servers? I want to be able to host my Minecraft server without it constantly lagging my computer to death.

could potentially get a raspberry pi or similar for that
server racks seem to be something you just kind of stumble upon

but also found out that there's free(?) server hosting: https://server.pro/

yeah unfortunately the only free hosting that service offers is a barebones minimum, with barely any CPU/RAM for the server. won't even let me use forge either.

it's not worth it to me.
