What is Fallout?
Fallout is a series of post-apocalyptic computer role-playing games originally produced and published by Interplay. Although set in and after the 22nd century, its story and artwork are heavily influenced by the post-World War II nuclear paranoia of the 1950s.

Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game is a post-apocalyptic computer role playing game that was developed and published by Interplay in 1997 and is the first game in the Fallout series. The game takes place in the year 2161 on the West Coast of what used to be the United States, particularly in California.

Fallout 2 is a post-apocalyptic computer role-playing game that was developed and published by Black Isle Studios in 1998 as a sequel to Interplay's Fallout. The game takes place in the year 2241 on the West Coast of what used to be the United States, mostly in California and Nevada.

Mechanics of the First Two Games

Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game uses a character creation system called SPECIAL. SPECIAL is an acronym of Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. These are the seven basic attributes of every character in the game. They are used to determine the skills and perks of the given character.

There are 18 different skills in the game. They are ranked from 0% to 200%. The starting values for those skills at level one are determined by the player's seven basic attributes or SPECIAL, but most of those skills would fall between 0% and 50%. Every time the player gains a Level, they will be awarded skill points to be used to improve their skills, equal to five points plus twice their Intelligence. The player may choose to "Tag" three of the 18 skills. A tagged skill will improve at twice the normal rate.
  • Six combat skills: Small Guns, Big Guns, Energy Weapons, Unarmed, Melee Weapons, Throwing.
  • Eight Active skills: First Aid, Doctor, Sneak, Lockpick, Steal, Traps, Science, Repair.
  • Four passive skills: Speech, Barter, Gambling, Outdoorsman.

At character creation, the player may choose two different traits and perks for their character. Traits are special character backgrounds. Most traits have profound effects on gameplay. A trait normally contains one beneficial effect and one detrimental effect. They are listed under perks in the character sheet. Once a Trait is chosen, it is impossible to change.

Fallout 2 shares many of its attriubuites with Fallout 1, with very little tweaks inbetween, like perks being upgradeable to 300% instead of 200%.

Fallout 3 is a post-apocalyptic computer and console role-playing game that has been developed and published by Bethesda Softworks as a sequel to Interplay's Fallout and Fallout 2. The game takes place in the year 2277 on the East Coast of what used to be the United States, mostly in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. The gameplay features include real-time combat and first or third person perspective, in contrast to the previous games.

Fallout: New Vegas is a video role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. While New Vegas is not a direct sequel, it is in the same style as Fallout 3, and has been developed by some of the developers of Fallout and Fallout 2. It is set in and around New Vegas, the Fallout-equivalent of Las Vegas.

Fallout Shelter is a free-to-play installment in the Fallout series for iOS, Android devices, and PCs that was announced at Bethesda's E3 2015 press conference on June 14, 2015. The game was released on the iOS App Store the same day, after the conference ended. The game allows the player to create their own Vault and thereby become an overseer of its inhabitants.

the banner for this one is cool
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, developed by Micro Forté and published by Interplay in 2001, is the third title in the Fallout series, but is not a traditional RPG (so it wasn't entitled Fallout 3). Instead, Fallout Tactics focuses on squad-based combat and introduces near real-time combat, called "continuous turn-based" by the developers, as well as a multiplayer mode, to the Fallout series. The plot of the game takes place in the American Midwest rather than the West Coast, as the previous Fallout titles did.

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel (abbreviated as FO:BoS, FOBOS or simply BOS) is an action game developed and produced by Interplay Entertainment for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 game consoles. Released on January 13, 2004, BoS was the fourth video game to be set in the Fallout universe and the first to be made for video game consoles.
