How mainstream can it be if you didn't even know the purpose behind the website? Snopes has been known for and became popular because of the urban legends and debunking them were a big thing back in the early 2000s. Since the internet was new and there were stories circulating, lots of websites like Snopes cropped up and started debunking infamous internet stories and copypastas.

Of course this whole paragraph is wasted because Matthew is loving delusional and out of touch with reality.
