are there any special mod rulesnot many, the only ones are:
- Buildcraft: Do not quarry a large area and not cover it up
- Rotarycraft: Same as above, but with the boring machine
As a side note, GregTech 6 changes a lot of early game features. Check an NEI recipe before making stuff too as the recipe may be changed.
