how do you use a custom avatar?

i've seen a lot of people around here with custom avatars but the option for me is just to use a preset smf forum avatar. do i have to wait for the ability to or has it just been disabled? i mean i have nothing against gwen stefani or kurt cobain, i'd just never want their likeness as my profile picture

If custom avatars were brought back, would you prefer they stay at the 75 x 75 level or would you rather them be bumped up to at least 100 x 100 like what a lot of other forums have?
