its proof that you meet a minimum standard of knowledge. certifications are the same thing, but often less adaptible - they only certify you for one thing, not for a broad range of jobs relating to a certain field (eg: difference between being an IT specialist versus a computer scientist who can also do software development, scripting, web development, backend, etc)
