It's way easier to change a sprite's color palette and adjust their attack power and HP than to create a completely new enemy from scratch.

cause even back then game developers were lazy

It's way easier to change a sprite's color palette and adjust their attack power and HP than to create a completely new enemy from scratch.
the weird thing is theres still a ton of streets of rage enemies that arent just recolors so its weird


fighting Green Guy With Mace in something like golden axe would get boring after awhile, so eventually Purple Guy With Mace and Red Guy With Mace show up.

it's usually just to denote that it's the same enemy / ai type but with different values or maybe a different way of attacking. iirc in golden axe the red / gold units would attack way faster than purple / green

palette swaps save space on the limited hardware
