if it wasn't clear i categorically do not respect them, nor do i believe they are deserving of respect. their loss was righteous. the history where the confederacy wins is one where slavery is allowed in america for perhaps a hundred or so years longer, if not still legal today (setting aside the fact that prisoner slavery is still widespread). war is violent, but so too is the ownership of other human beings. confederate soldiers dedicated themselves to that violence voluntarily.

playing to empathy isn't very compelling because the logical extrapolation of this rhetoric demands that historic evils such as the axis powers and imperialists should be revered and honored in the same way. after all, they died violent deaths in much the same way as confederate soldiers, yes? you cannot separate these wars from their context and intent.
