Author Topic: Looking for a word  (Read 58 times)

I'm looking for the word that describes assuming other people have the same skill as you. E.g. Thinking something is obvious and everyone should know it despite you actually having a background in the subject.

ah, the "curse of knowledge" as it's famously called. if your looking for a 1 worded answer it would probably be something like egocentrism

Maybe egocentrism but I felt like it was lighter sounding than that... if that makes sense. IDK

there isnt a word for it but it's sort of like solipsism

In a cognitive development sense, it could be referred to as "theory of mind", where kids up to a certain age aren't able to conceptualize that other people have different information than them.

example, they see you have a box of goldfish crackers, and see you put in some gummy bears, then ask them what their friend would think is in the box. Up to a certain age, the kid would say gummy bears like it is obvious even though there is no way their friend would know this, but around 5 or so the kid would understand that their friend didn't have that information and would incorrectly assume the box has goldfish crackers in it
