Author Topic: I have started to learn about overclocking/under volting  (Read 789 times)

I have finally advanced beyond basic bios settings into the scary CPU/Voltage menus... and man did it work for once. I have never had a computer actually function while testing with prime95, my older stuff AMD 8370 was never ever stable to the point I had to turn off turbo. I think I might be able to return to that CPU and possibly get it functional now.

I have set all cores on the i5-9600k to x46 and left almost everything on auto, only one core typically boosts to this. I have also changed the voltage to be fixed at 1.25v ("fixed" but it still goes lower and a tiny bit higher if it needs) Some power saving options are still on like c states. I could go higher but my fans are annoying and I'm pretty happy with the boost, I went from around 300-350 fps to 390-450 fps in an empty mirage map in CS2 (Low Graphics) mostly because I just wanted to see how high I could get the number to go. I have also dropped my GPU wait time massively stabilizing my frame response time which was the goal. All this and my fans are quieter.

Prior to OC related settings I changed some other stuff like a couple power settings, "above 4g decoding" turned to on and asrocks "CAM" (Resizable Bar) on as well but I'm not even sure works with my gpu but eh, just doing that stuff made me go from 250 to 300 fps area, same map on CS.

thnx for reading about my big brain moment, lets see how long it takes for my computer to catch fire. Tips appreciated if I've said something really dumb.

For the most part it's been just reading all sorts of different stuff across the internet. Focus on learning EVERYTHING about what's in your bios, READ THE MANUAL, google setting names etc. I will admit I have used some chatgpt and it's very clear it doesn't know great details about my motherboard yet will still speak extremely confidently about it, I only ever ask very general questions and then use google to dig into it more. E.g. screenshots of hwinfo with "Do you see anything wrong" which can get me to properly googling things.

The big things: You should know what your CPU is requesting for power (hwinfo) you should know what your motherboard is supplying for power (hwinfo), you should know what other people have run that CPU at both stock and overclock, you should also know what your weakest piece of hardware is as this give you a clearer picture of what's going on. Learn all of this and you'll be putting yourself into a proper mindset to google more. Start with grabbing hwinfo and checking your presentmon stats "gpu wait" and "cpu wait", you can see what program it is looking at from the tab title.


I'm paranoid when it comes to CPU stuff, so I settled for a slight undervolt on my GPU with LACT/Adrenalin (on AMD for the first time in what I think is a decade and a half). I have no idea if it's actually doing anything.

on your current system though - if you don't already have it enabled you could turn on hardware accelerated gpu scheduling to offload some of the cpu work to your gpu, to free up some cpu headroom

x47 locked cores, x43 uncore, 1.28v locked and we're stable? I was raising my uncore ratio up to 44-46 and it was seemingly what was causing my computer to crash at x47 core. I top out at 96-98c with prime95 active which I believe is ok as long as I'm not running games like this.

I think x48 core requires the 1.34v area and going up to that spikes my cpu into 100-110c with prime95 running which is toooooo high.

At least I'm now using a "real" overclock.

Edit: I chose to head back to my other overclock as this did not seem fully stable. Despite running it felt like performance was actually worse and I got the "I stood up too fast and now I'm passing out" effect where everything on my screen started getting brighter. I am now playing around with x48 core x43 uncore, 1.30v, LLC lvl 2-3 with a avx offset of -2. I don't really know if I'm ever hitting 4.8ghz but in theory this should be better.

AVX offset will drop my core clock to 46x ratio for heavy loads to prevent my computer from crashing while in theory still allowing certain tasks to run faster.
