Author Topic: Making Blockland Beta playable  (Read 287 times)

so for those that dont know, the beta v7 build of blockland has a lot of missing necessary files and no server side serialization which makes it impossible to actually start your own server locally. the only way to actually play the beta was beta testers had to join a dedicated server that badspot was hosting at the time. it essentially acted as a failsafe to prevent beta testers from leaking the game before release. i didn't really intend to go so gun ho on this, but using ai i was able to rewrite the server side serialization along with packupdates for all the key parts of blockland that aren't currently present in the build (GameBase, ShapeBase, Player, Camera, fxDTSBrick etc.)

i dont really know how much farther i can go with this, but im gonna keep playing with it and see where it goes. i thought yall would dig this cause i about stuff myself when i actually booted into a server and it didnt crash lol

still got a lot of packupdates to fix, buts starting to look a lot more like blockland now. the sun packupdate is next and once that lands avatars will stop being black silhouettes

i think thats it for tonight. basic lighting is enabled, avatar options are 99.9% complete, interiors load, but theres a lot of hang ups that need to be addressed. and obviously the lighting is wrong but ill figure it out later

is this the vibe-coded blockland Maxwell was talking about on Swholi's server or is that a separate thing

in any case this is neat, I love seeing old BL stuff restored like this

Separate thing

does involve some ai use from what was mentioned in b4v21 by modman himself., if people care

use of ai or not, the fact you even got it remotely playable i feel is a big deal for something that's somewhat lost media

i feel like use of ai is fine for restoring functionality to software that wouldn't be worth restoring without it.
