the usage of datacenters is clear, but what the data center is doing is unclear - ie are they running user queries, or training? its better to argue against ai in a exact-usage agnostic way, as its harder to refute. ie dont say ai is bad it uses water/power, say all these ai datacenters are bad and using water/power.

literally this

This is technically correct, and much of the data centers actual use goes into private security monitoring and ai databases of citizen behaviours online through companies such as palantir, flock etc.
Generative AI however still has a signifcant environmental impact on its own accord, and further the ethical issues of piracy and the whole "burning rare and unique texts so that the only copy exists in the digital banks of an AI company which cannot legally recreate the missing text but can provide summaries of it" is kinda loving insane.

i did this in chatgpt for my dad.

it was a bitch to get it to that point on account this is what chatgpt first spit out lol

Data's pretty clear. Soukuw changed his mind. Seems like my argument was effective.
He's correct for the record; I am feeling quite negative towards the water argument as I suspect a number of data centers use systems that loop the water a few times and on top of that the source for "The waters bad!" always seems to be that one lady complaining about her well water. It might be easier to work off something else as there's plenty to complain about that doesn't use the questionable water argument but hell maybe I just need to look more into it myself rather than taking other peoples word for it.

I would encourage you to look into the fact that some of the datacentres built recently are poisoning ground water/drinking water. those are also bad.

just dont obviously take any data provided by LLM providers as fact because they have incentive to lie about it. the AI companies that currently stand are all run by very obviously evil people so...

my dad wrote a book about a star that destroys earth and thats my 3d reconstruction of the event

Meta AI Data Center Linked To Rare Bacteria In City’s Water System

some of these data centers that are going up are trying to leech the water/electricity/etc from small towns because it's easy to buy the city council in these places. like a "give us discounted utilities because we will bring jobs here" type arrangement

in terms of environmental hazards, they also produce infrasound which is very damaging to humans and animals alike

Eh, I'm not gonna beat a dead horse, there's studies that I've read that suggest the water usage is high and the possibility of contamination is high and as far as I know the only sources to "debunk" this have been from OpenAI themselves and I don't trust a "we studied ourselves and found nothing wrong," but I'll admit the science is still early and I could be wrong.

Of course, with Nvidia's advances in chips, there's a likely chance that hyperscale datacenters are extinct by the end of the year just as a business model when we can cheaply and efficiently run most AI models locally and so the bigger corpo push for "we need these things built yesterday" argument is continually falling apart.

That bacteria I was aware of, and the sound; plus the usage on electricty is equally concerning, we're already seeing prices climb near places where they've been built.

That all being said, at the end of the day I too am most worried about the usage of AI for surveillance as well.

What Aide said is ultimately also my sentiment, I won't harp on what's likely semantics as long as we're all on the same page about big tech doing evil big tech stuff and it does seem like we're all on the same page about this issue at least

forget AI and LLMs

And uh.. no that's it.

AI is a blight on humanity. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

I think that using LLMs is lame. I don't not care about the ethical issues and etc but ultimately even if they were not present it would still be lame. there is no way to recover from that

i legitimately think that there should be sweeping legislation to make any new data center project (no matter what it's for) use 100% renewable energy because: https://www.wired.com/story/real-reason-data-center-gas-power-plants-are-so-dirty/

like in the last 20 years there's been those gas powered bitcoin plants, now this. any internet infra should be clean by now and it's stupid that we don't jail people for just running gas generators 24/7 because it's profitable.
