They were the least honorable warriors in Japan, that's one of the reasons they were feared: They didn't play by the rules. They used all kinds of tactics to ensure their own survival and that the target they were ordered to dispatch would die, "honor" wasn't exactly a tactic.

Ooh Japanese history, a favorite topic for me.

The Samurai families were the ones who held themselves with a code of honor and a very intricate way of life. Every else had to bow to their authority.

Ninjas were pretty much trained hitmans.

Pirates are drunks with swords going around robbing people.

They were trained to perform their job of silencing high priority people. They had a big complex devoted to training their clan members in Ise, Japan.

The "hitmen" would be the rebels/ronin in the countryside, basically if you paid them enough money they would do their job. But sadly peasants only can pay so much, and rebels/ronin had a reputation of being less than faithful to their word. At least that's how it was during the Tokugawa Shogunite.

If I remember there was a shogunate that had all the ninjas working for him, they were his body guards and would dress up as workers. Their weapons were whatever they were working with, like tree trimming cutters and such.

I don't know the details but it's rather fascinating stuff.
