There have been various artificial life and evolution simulations, some using 3d physics simulation that are actually really cool to look at.  However they tend to be obtuse and elusive as they're usually made by CS grad students, not game developers.

The classic life game is Conway's game of life ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life ) which I'm sure you can find an implementation of if you search.
