Get Wiremod and PHX.
Wiremod sucks but every server has it these days so you'll be needing it if planning to play online.
PHX is very useful and just overall awesome.

Get phx3 svn. It includes 4 awesome model packs + some models you can't dl on gmod.org

I wouldn't say it sucks, its just that 2% of the gmod population can actually use it.
www.garrysmod.org is down at the moment, so have fun searching for an hour to find your mods on Facepunch.
