You can obtain much more enjoyment from doom than you could from many of these newfangled shooter games.
On a further note, the graphics should have nothing to do with this situation...
"Okay, almost got it working-- oh wait, this has graphics from a long time ago, it must suck *smashes with sledgehammer and proceeds to become a halocigarette*"
In the many years since doom(and from a more accurate standpoint, Quake), developers have failed to revolutionize much further in the FPS genre aside from making the graphics look "UBER PWNAGE".
I agree that doom can give you more enjoyment; I just had a bad experience. As far as me saying something about the graphics, it isn't normally an issue (
rarely an issue), even though I am a graphics+gameplay believer. It really looked horrible. The brown walls would turn red when I got near them, and that was the biggest thing for me. It literally hurt my eyes, which is strange since I own the NES and its pixel-laden fun never hurts my eyes.
As far as me giving up on it, it was because it was not letting me join even though I got the wads downloading properly, and nothing at all seemed to fix it. Also, I enjoy Halo. I don't see what is wrong with it even though people call it a copypaste game, but the way it executes everything I enjoy.
Also, FPS's can be pretty hard to make original, so most people just make them with "UBER PWNAGE" graphics. Sure there is one that comes along that adds something a bit new such as portal, but it is still a very simple genre of games.
I would buy doom2 on steam, but my dad is strange. He's fine with buying stuff on the internet, its just getting him to do it that can be hard. I have slightly better odds of going to the store and buying whatever it is.
