Author Topic: How science may kill us all come October 12th  (Read 7611 times)

You may have already seen that in that weird movie with that floating alarm clock.

On October 12th, we'll (we being a team of international scientists / humanity as a whole) stard the LHC, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland and try to make a black hole, which after a theory - read: theory - from Stephen Hawking, the man himself, should evaporate - and maybe leave behind a so-called "relic" which is, for all ands and purposes, a loving infinite source of energy that can provide the whole earth with electricity with just one ton of ANY material, like radioactive waste.

On the bad side, if it all goes poopy, we'll all be spaghettified, then squashed together into a space smaller then a proton. Whilst several teams have assessed the experiment and improved it and call it now perfectly safe, doubt still exists.

What do you think? Humanitys' solution, dream, or downfall?

Ostuff Im not gonna make it to 13 D:
my birthdays 10/31 (and if you didnt know that's Halloween)

We will stard the LHC and if all goes wrong, we will all be dead.

And you know what's funny? October 12 is in fact my birthday.

xD wow lolz
funny how I was born on halloween, but Im always sick before I even leave the house...
My luck T.T

Pssh, mine is all the way in December. forget YOU SCIENCE!!

I hate the idiots for thinking we'll all die when LHC goes off.

First off, what's the point of telling people? You think that they are going to stop one of the most important experiments because of some cowards?

Also I remember reading somewhere where physicists and other scientists proved it wouldn't cause a black hole...
I'll try to find it..

Quote
If two subatomic particles collide at high enough speed, it’s possible that they will collapse into a black hole. If that happens, it would fall through the Earth and, well, you can guess what bad things would happen then*.

However, studies done by CERN show that the energies generated will be too low to make black holes. Also, due to a weird effect called Hawking radiation, the tiny black holes would evaporate instantly. The two litigants, however, say that Hawking radiation is not an established fact, and therefore we should be more careful. While that’s technically true, they forgot something important: the same rules of quantum physics that make a black hole in a subatomic collision also indicate they would evaporate. So if you’re worried they won’t evaporate, then you shouldn’t be worried they’d be created in the first place.

Same goes for the creation of a quantum strangelet. This is a weird conglomeration of particles called quarks, and if a strangelet comes into contact with normal matter can convert it into more strangelets. The idea is that these can cause a chain reaction that turns all available matter into strangelets. That would be bad.

However, first, strangelets are completely theoretical, and again even if they are real it’s incredibly unlikely they would be created even by LHC. And even if they were created, the chances of them being a danger are very small. A study a few years ago by physicists at MIT, Yale, and Princeton shows this to be the case; as they point out, higher energy particles hit the Moon all the time. If strangelets could be created in this way, the Moon would have converted to a big ball o’ strangelets billions of years ago.

Now please also use explain the logic of telling people?

People should learn to live life as if today was their last day to live....everyday. That being said, even if there became a black hole, just enjoy life while we all die.
Also if you're a good person(and religious or else you wouldn't believe this) then you would go to Heaven or w/e equal afterlife there is in your religion(or if none, just believe that science won the game).

EDIT: Fixed grammatical error in first sentence.

K, look, Im not an idiot who thinks we'll all die when LHC goes off.
Im just an idiot period.

The thing is that if these conditions could create a strangelet, then they would have already been made, and killed us all. Sorry, but I have no source, or why.

Edit: Oh, and I almost forgot. Old news is really loving old.

Indeed. Theres enough proof that the LHC won't kill us all.

October 12th? im a bit busy that day, i can fit you in on the 13th if that is of interest to you?

There have been several topics about this, each time we've concluded that it doesn't matter, we're all expected to die 2012 anyway.

nou

not me, ill die in 2013 when jesus comes back.

The LHC has already been activated:

TWICE.

You're a bit late.
