Author Topic: Vehicle Control Enhancement  (Read 2320 times)

I'm a driver/pilot enthusiast, so I was quite frustrated and enraged when I couldn't fly the darn bi-plane through the kitchen window!  I can do it now, but it is very difficult to pull off because you have no feedback on your control mechanism, the mouse.  The problem is I can't tell which way I'm turning untill I'm already doing it.  With a joystick, I know if I point it left, I'm going to go left.  With the mouse, if I move it left, I have little clue as to whether I'm really going left, or just less right.
This problem has a simple, universal cure: show the mouse when driving a vehicle.  Any vehicle.  A simple "third party" mod, indepentant of the vehicle, can do this simple thing, no?  This is the most basic way to fix the problem; I see the mouse, I know which way I am turning/going to turn, and by how much.
A better solution would be to put some sort of "aiming reticule" in place or the mouse's position, maybe with a line leading from the center with a color code (maybe green-yellow-red, blending would be nice) to see the intensity (distance from center) of the turn.
With this ability, you can fly a plane carefully and precisely, mastering the control and pulling off moves you didn't think possible.  I'd write this code myself, but I just don't have time to learn the language.
So, I'm thinking something like the background music mod; you press a hotkey, and presto! The steering gui is online, whether you're in a vehicle or not.

I think you're supposed to look at the tires but I never remember to do it

It's a great idea, but you can't just "show the mouse" because the cursor is constantly reset to the center of the window.

Most people look at the head or such for an idea of where they're going; personally, I'm just used to the amount you need to move the mouse.

In v9 the steering will constantly center.

i heard driving is going to be W A S D instead of W S and have the mouse to turn.

The mouse is contantly reset to the center of the window?  Why does the vehicle behave as if it isn't?  Can someone explain more clearly then how vehicle control works?

My bad, that didn't make much sense.

When you move your mouse down, the game records that movement and resets the mouse so you can't move it off the screen. Once you've moved your mouse down, it's centered on the screen, but your plane is being told to move up.

Unfortunately this is a sandbox game, not a flight simulator. Try Microsoft Flight Simulator X or something.

Well, sure it's a sandbox game game, but I can't even get one of the darn things on the ground without crashing.  I now always bring a parachute with me when I go flying.  In case I lose control or get shot down, I can LIVE!!!  I like living!
So, in light of the strange changes, anything we can do to simulate the mouse's position to make it easier to fly?  I like the fine tuning that a mouse provides, but I'm steering in the dark here.  Anything that is a gui or hud would be perfect, watching my head or the wheels is not good enough.

Im pretty good at flying (in bl) so Ill just tell you that I kinda agree...the worst problem is that stalling mid-flight is almost unavoidable with the biplane/stuntplane so it IS kind of hard to drive.

a and d are used for rolling while in flight

I don't like the new style of turning, it was much better in Tribes 2.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I think Wing Commander had something like this. There was a normal crosshair, but when using the mouse, there was a smaller white crosshair that was use ful for telling which direction you were in. I dunno how to explain it, but I'm pretty sure that's what you mean and I'd like to see this.

Not in air vehicles though.

WASD steers the vehicle, and mouse makes you look around. I think it only works on land vehicles, and you can toggle it off in options if you like the old system better.

Note that its easier to fly in first person then in third
