I typed my research paper without making two spaces after periods. We followed the MLA rule. Not sure if that covers how you should space every sentence, but i don't think it's required to have two spaces. I understand why you could use it to make your document seem more formal.

I've always double spaced.  I was taught to do it by mum when I was 4.

It's actually incorrect to double-space after periods. But I have no problem with it. It looks the same as single spacing.

...Except there is more of a space.
