Author Topic: Wii Blockland?  (Read 5455 times)

I meant to say I just realized it, what more do you want? It is 12:30 and I am tired.

Cease the fight, it is full of friendry and is poisoning the thread D:<

IMO, Blockland on consoles wouldn't really work out, especially the god-damned Nintendo-loving-Wiinis. (Sorry, everyone is randomly talking about the Wii. I like the Wii, but not when everyone is talking too much about it). The only console that actually has a chance of running Blockland is the 360, which would probably have to use a keyboard and mouse for it. It wouldn't be that great, its just like on the PC except your using a TV. Don't even ask for Achievements. There are absolutely NO achievements possible in Blockland except for completing the tutorial.

If you want to be specific about it, you could bring it to both the 360 and the PS3 however there are 2 problems.

1. Porting isn't as straightforward as one might think (especially for the PS3 with all it's funky tech) and would take a huge amount of time and effort.
2. You can't assume people are going to have the USB keyboard and mouse accessories and/or a place to put them.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are both very lucky in the sense that they were able to bundle in a piece of hardware with their games and still get people to buy them at their extortionate prices. I doubt you could sell Blockland with a keyboard/mouse successfully.

I think many games have shown how shallow achievements really are and I don't think there would be any difficulty in thinking up some mundane goals (like building x number of bricks in x amount of time) to award.

So far I haven't even mentioned the possible road blocks involved with online play. I mean, xbox live and PSN are both very different and it would be a longshot to say that you could host your own servers.

Or becoming on so many servers (:P) getting so many kills from DM, maybe in the high thousands.

Well.....yes it could work. type wii remote on pc on youtube. you wouldnt be able to play it on your wii consle but you would be able to play it on your pc with the wi remote
Btw is this crap in a cup? :iceCream:

Kinda pointless to play on your computer with a wiimote.

Even if he did ink a great deal for selling the game on a disk for a PC or a console, he wouldn't be able to make $40 or $50 a game. The fact that BL is a niche game and hasn't been widely advertised would give it a low suitable price point (probably about what it is now, $30 max. On top of that, you have the cost of publishing the game (disks don't make themselves) and by no means would BS ever see the big part of what ever small profit margin would exist.

Other problems:

>Blockland requires a complex control scheme for brick placement and player movement which suits PCs over consoles.
>Licensing fees, processing fee's and other restrictions would make getting Blockland onto consoles a lengthy and costly endeavor.
>No add on system on the consoles (Huge disadvantage).

I think it would be nigh on impossible for BS to break even if he ported Blockland to a console.

If he ported Blockland to the Wii, he could distribute it through WiiWare, which would cost him a lot less than putting it on disks.
The control scheme could easily be ported to the WiiMote + Nunchuck:

And you still have 2 extra buttons (For menus and such).

And if that didn't work, the Wii, along with the 360 and PS3, has USB ports you could use to hook up a keyboard and mouse.

I admit the lack addon system would be very hard to make the game sucessful, but using the harddrives on the 360, SD Card on the Wii, and Memory Card on the PS3, you might be able to over come that.

Just some thoughts...

-stuff-
I reiterate: it's not logical to be put on a Wii. Not only would the control be ridiculous, and not suited for the game vs. the System, but Freeware does not run well on a Wii anyway.

It would be easier and more logical to port it to the 360, because not only does the 360 OS support Torque, Torque supports the 360 OS, too. That's right.

GarageGames opened this opportunity by bringing the core Torque technologies to a variety of console platforms like Xbox, Xbox 360

Early in the development of the hardware for the next generation Xbox360 console {...} GarageGames quickly ported their flagship Torque Game Engine: Advanced (TGEA) to the new platform.

Notice that the ported the Torque Game Engine Advance to the 360. Not the version that BL was made from.

@ thorax - how would I rotate bricks? spray can? wrench?

I assume "Wiiware" is the Nintendo version of an online marketplace? If so, I wonder how much money (or rather, small royalty payments) BS would make off that.

Theres no compelling financial reason for the game to be brought to consoles, even if you could overcome the technical aspects. I think that the culture of console gaming and PC gaming are a little too different for BL. Most games for consoles are made to be easy to pick up off the get go, load a save game, kill a few guys and log off again. Blockland, on the other hand, is about long, online matches with no real goals or win scenarios and is based strongly around it's community and user made addons.

The next logical step for BL would be to advertise on the television but that seems unlikely.

There is a completly different problem existant for many consoles, the lack of a proper amount of ram :)

Other than that, making controls work out for wii wouldn't be a big problem

example: you press and hold one button, use the nunchuck to choose the brick you want and use the wiiMote to place/move your brick, using aiming, still holding the same button you used for choosing, pressing another button enables the rotation features.

There just has to be put some thought in it, there are many small things that could even be ported to the current controls used, cause, they aren't as good as they could be I think :)

*Edit*:
The RAM problem could probably be solved using a special grouping system for bricks, though, that would carry on an imense amount of work, so, won't work out :P

Result: No Blockland for Wii | but maybe, usermade, wiiMote controls for pc :P

Wow, I have never seen a greater act of stupidity.

You don't use the internet much, do you?

Most Wii games have ridiculous controls anyways. And it wouldn't be freeware, you would have to pay for it.

True there is not financial reason, but it was just a thought. But as for the pickup and play, you wouldn't host a server, it would be dedicated so you don't lose your bricks, but noone could join it until the of the server was on entered. But the lack of ram would make it hard to make many bricks.

Maybe it could be one of those games where you gotta have the Classic Controller to play it.

You can't buy the Classic Controller anymore, it has copyright infringment. (No idea how to spell that.
