I like the saucer idea, w,a,s,d, to move, mouse to look around and aim, and the scrolling button to hover up and down.

the scrolling button is kind like spore :P also make it look like a spore ufo :D

I'm not realy a scripting person but i think you could use the airship floating code and the arwings shooting code for the laser but make it one stream of light like a realy fine line of lasers or atleast a laser will do, then use the same controls the flying carpet uses to fly. and there you go! a loving  flying saucer. lol
