Author Topic: Mr. Smash's pointless experiment  (Read 3948 times)

On the evening of October the 18th the following question was asked: why do people click the centre button first? Due to significant boredom Mr.Smash's mind began to wonder, do people really click the centre button first?

Because the question was so useless, no one was able to provide a solid answer, so smash decided to challenge this for himself.

Using his advanced skills of engineering in a children's block game, he produced a device that had 3 buttons each button was wired to a counter that would take a recording every time the button was clicked. To ensure the results would not be corrupted by rapid clickers, he rigged the device to only accept 1 result every 10 seconds. The recordings where hidden, no one knew what the device was for, this would prevent “cheating” the result.

This device was built in the MotE server and left to collect results for 24 hours.

Hypothesis

I would believe that the centre button would receive the largest amount of clicks because when people see the 3 buttons they might assume that the middle button is the most important.

Actual results

The first button(left hand side) received 26 clicks

The Second(Centre)  received 10 clicks

While the last(right hand side) only received 9 clicks

My theory's

People assumed that the buttons had to be clicked in some order going from left to right, resulting in the first button taking the point for the clicks.

A lot of people who visited the device may have been lazy bastards and went straight for the first button which is nearest to the spawn.

Or people could of just seen that the first button is the most important, followed by the second and then the last.

Thank you for reading my pointless experiment.

I can do science me.

so i guess Mr.smash pays attention in science class...alot

I clicked the left side, didn't know what it was. :)

Nice Smash.

so i guess Mr.smash pays attention in science class...alot

Wut? that barely relates.

i said that because he has this set up EXACTLY the same way in science.

how? that was a pretty simple experiment

The last line i said was "i can do science me" this is a phrase taken out of the show called brainiac.

oh. I never catch that show while its on :panda:

Idea's for change. Put the buttons under the bed in the middle. This will insure that people won't just go for the closest one, giving it more of an accurate test.

make one red, one green, and one blue, and see if the results change.

Make them different heights

I enjoyed reading this.

Excellent job Prof. Smash
