It's acts like a rootkit and its intended purpose was to secretly sniff around your PC for things that may be illegal. People didn't like this and simply uninstalling the game that had SecuROM wouldn't erase SecuROM from your computer. On top of all that bullstuff there were(still are?) several security flaws that could allow hackers easier access to your PC.

Also, Spore and some other popular games have it, and people wanted to boycott spore because of this.  But it was Spore, so it kinda didn't happen.  The newer versions of SecuROM seem to be safe, though, they just add an extra process that automatically starts with your computer (only really noticeable thing), that can't be easily removed (I've uninstalled Spore, it's still there).  It causes no trouble, though.

Only trouble I'm getting is that my computer runs twice as slow now

for games like red alert 3, you can only authenticate your game on 5 computers, so no more reformatting for you. plus once you use up the 5 you have to call customer support for more authentications or the game is useless.

Thre is such thing as a root kit remover, but its easier said than down. Its like getting shot in the leg. If you yank out the bullet, you could cause great damage. So remeoveing it could render your pc worthless.
