The worst thing about tiers is that players are forced to use certain strategies with certain characters in order to compete at the very top because they are so very closely competitive.  This is bad because it devalues getting good with characters that you like, and is more about getting good at characters because they are slightly better.  It also gives an unfair advantage to those who naturally like characters who are top tier, as opposed to those who prefer the fighting style of a lower tier character.  With the technology of the internet, and the ability to do patches, I think that games that develop tiers should provide updates that balance things out.  Starcraft did it, and it has gotten known for being so very balanced, why can't other games do it?

Different players are better with different characters. As playing melee, I played as a bunch of characters, and found I was pretty good with link. So I played as him then figured out he and zelda where in the same game, so I tried zelda and I was pwning level 9's which was pretty good for the age I was... I then wanted to see what the original was, so there I tried some of the old original SSB characters, and found out I sucked with half of them

If you are thinking that hard about a game, you need to put down the controller and let up for awhile. Strategy is fine, but to rip apart and brown townyze the performance of each playable character just to win is pathetic.
