Author Topic: Computer gets extremely low FPS on Left 4 Dead and HL2, need help.  (Read 2320 times)

Figured this was the right section.

So I got a new laptop on Tuesday, runs very smoothly - Until I start a game, that is. I get about 10 FPS at most on L4D, but generally only 2 (This is on the lowest resolution on all low settings running in a window). On HL2 it's slightly better. What I don't understand is that it has all high settings by default in hl2 and medium in L4D and it still lags terribly.

Specs from dxdiag:

Operating System: Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001)
Memory: 2814MB RAM
Page file: 1881MB used, 3963MB available
Processor: AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-70 (2 CPUs), ~2.0 GHz
System Model: HP G60 Notebook PC
DirectX Version: 10

Display:

Name: NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G
Total Memory: 1394 MB
Display mode: 1366 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz)
DAC Type: Integrated RAMDAC

Please help if you can, I've tried everything I can think of.

Get a better one.

Mine is 4GB Ram

9600M GS

It still runs are just above average. Not even all that great.

I can't loving get a different computer. It's still new, computers are expensive, and I'm shocked that I got this one at all.

I got a stufftier computer then that, and I get higher FPS's then you on it.

Something is defently wrong. return it.

You have a integrated Video card.

That means its not only stuff but its sucking ram off you're computer just to be running.

And you have a laptop, hard to replace video cards for a laptop, most arent even replacable.

You got screwed.

I have a laptop. 256mb RAM, 1.5gpz CPU. Rans HL2 at 20fps.

Too lazy to look up cpu.

This, coupled with Vista's sheer RAM usage could be the problem.

integrated graphics on modern games is a terrible idea.
games get better and better, yet the years roll by and integrated cards for some reason never improve.
that is why a 300 dollar laptop isn't a gaming computer.
and for some reason i don't really understand, laptops alone already make for worse gaming JUST because they are laptops.

it could be vista's fault, but not because of memory usage, only dipstuffs believe that.
its the processes and services vista has running on default.

google them up and find out what ones you dont need. disable the ones you dont need/want.

for god's sake dont run games in window'ed. that's likely whats causing bad frames anyway. games dont treat memory the same as just any app active window. your comp might be keeping all the memory on the desktop use, thinking your not even playing a game, but instead running a little app.

Wut, mine was made in like 2005, and it can run HL2 at like, double that.

1GB RAM, 256MB ATI Xpress 200M (or something like that), and a 1.6ghz Intel Celeron M.

Mine isn't really beating you by much, except for RAM.

Well there's your problem!

No, seriously. Follow Bisjac's advice.

Its the graphics card.

Found this quote on Yahoo answers.

"
NFS Most Wanted - not at all
RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 Platinum - low settings
GTA Vice City - not at all
Spore - not at all
The Sims 2 (Any) - low to medium settings
First Person Shooters - only the ones at least 3 years old at low settings
GeForce 8200M G is designed to be used in office laptops only."

And this quote on Notebook check:

"However, the performance of the chip is hardly sufficient for very modest games with low details"

Also, i saw this

Shared Memory: Yes, Onboard GPU

Its not the computer, just the GPU doesn't cut it. And you might want to try giving Best Buy 40$ becuase i hear they will take EVERYTHING that resembles crapware of your computer.

haha, bottlenecked much?

You're not going anywhere with AGP bud.

Really? Never knew that.
What if I were to shut down explorer.exe while playing?

It could still distribute the RAM to other apps. Best just to play full screen.
