He did it to avoid having Atticus post it, and having to admit to acting strange to say the least. In which case he would have ended up "owning up" to the facts and probably would have salvaged his reputation.

Except he chose to make his own topic to somehow change the subject and have it eventually fizzle away. But we know how that ended, and how he responded...
