Author Topic: Ubuntu vs Xp  (Read 2034 times)

In regard to making a dedicated server. Is it worth it to Install this less resorch hogging OS, but need to go through the strains of wine? I need help.

Its a stuffty computer. Anyone else have a dedi with Ubuntu or something?

I have Ubuntu running my dedicated, it works like a dream. Yes, it is worth it. When I used windows on it, the server lagged in-game.

Doit, it's really simple.

Ubuntu is no-nonsense.

Everything Linux, like Leopard and Ubuntu (I have both) tend to work the best for dedicated servers for me. Anything except XP.

Thanks. Wanted to be sure that the performance benefits of Ubuntu would not be weighed out by needing to use Wine.

Ubuntu for everything without exe's.
(wine runs most things ok but with a bit of a fps loss)

Ya, really have to watch your fps on those console windows.

I've played blockland on ubuntu for a long time now, it's great. Never had a single crash.

Not only blockland, but WoW, and every single other game I own.

No.

forget tell me you lie.

I spent three hours yesterday attempting to install ubuntu on my stufftop. When tat failed, I stuck the HDD in this computer. It worked, but I lsot my grub. The I reinstalled my grub, that took forever. Now the loving craptop wouldn't work correctly.

For a server, try a SERVER OS!! Jesus, not that hard to comprehend. Unless you just want a box... Then you can stick whatever stuffty OS you want on it.

If you want low resource use, high stability and compatability, Windows Server 2000 (or 2003) or bust. Dont build a 'server' and use anything other than a server OS.

Sounds good. One problem, I don't have any money, only an old computer and lots of Ubuntu install disks.

Yarly. For a good dedi, get a good server OS like Windows Server 2003. Doesn't matter about version or up-to-date-ness. As long as it has enough CPU power, the hard drive doesn't break and it's got the right OS and power then you'll be A-Okay.

Ubuntu (Linux) IS a server OS. Practically all of the longest-running, highest-load servers and supercomputers use a Unix OS like Linux. Linux has much lower system requirements than Windows Server (it doesn't even require you to support a GUI, unlike WS) and higher uptimes.

Space Guy, I am well aware of *nix in the server OS realm... But did you actually just say that the Ubuntu in mention is a server OS?

I wont disagree with you, but your claims are completely out-of-scope for this forum. I mean, come on, dont you think he'll need a UI?

I'm willing to bet if he checked his local Craigslist, or asked around, he could get a copy of Server 2000 or 2003, for pennies on the dollar. And dont act like nobody pirates these OS's, for those without a Microsoft Funpack for all their software needs.
