I think you need one to make a guild.
I am getting to around 20k gold now too.
To upgrade your guild to a new level, you need to donate items to the guild right, herbs etc. I think the guild rune just boosts something, dunno.
Also, just change the channel up at the top, to the right of your stats, there should be a number, click on it and chooose channel. The receptionist is sometimes gone, just check all channels.

And destiny, if I wish to play a tank, is the secondary of a mage good?
