I enjoy Art Deco architecture, which is basically a style used widely in the US from World War 1 to World War 2. I sum it up like this; Art Deco is essentially a form of architecture in which America build badass buildings because they could.
Art Deco, in my opinion at least, lets it's outstanding form speak louder than colors and materials. Materials, not so much in Blockland but colors yes, are a very big deal.
This is the Chrysler Building, finished in 1930 and held the world's tallest building record from 1930-'31. Here's a picture if you're not already familiar.

Now here's the Burj Dubai, which will be the world's tallest building upon completion.

Get the difference? Where the Burj Dubai has glass and glamor, the Chrysler Tower basically just looks badass.
And what's better, building in black and white sets apart the color and furthers the olden-futuristic idea.
