He said he'd lost all his friends. Not lost his friends, lost all his friends. Usually all means more that usual, at least that's how I usually interpret it if you can say the sentence itself without it. I'll find a quote eventually.

Also I don't mind his asking for help. (I do mind him asking for pity, however) I mean, if what he says is true, he has no one to turn to for advice. He has no friends and if he's still in touch with his family they probably don't want anything to do with him. Where else to go other than complete strangers? Albeit on the internet it's still better than nothing.

EDIT: Also, considering he lost all his friends, they probably weren't that good of friends to begin with.
