Melee is controlled by an invisible projectile, so it does both at once. The melee is the same speed as the normal sword, so no worries in closeup fights.

Well, it shoots energy. It's kind of like, a wand, or something.
For a sword to hit something, it has to fire a projectile, but a projectile doesn't have to have a shape file.

Nice model, very good for a beginner, although you could have made something more origional, instead of something from an anime. 5/5 for model -1 for origionality (or rather lack thereof) 4/5 overall.
