LEGO has to pay for x because of x and they have always had the same prices.
licensed products (starwars, indiana jones, etc.) cost more because lego has to pay for licensing fee.

(spongebob, prince of persia, indiana jones, ect)

Back in the day Lego actually made their own stuff and didn't have to pay for patents because it was their own ideas.  Now almost every set is off of a movie or something dumb so they have to bump the price up on all of those.

Not to mention it actually costs to make plastic believe it or not.
Lego is pretty damn high quality and they have high precision molds. Thats why all the bricks are so sharp and edged, not to mention they have loving ROBOTS to carry around the finished plastic pieces around the factory.

Then they mold more plastic stuff so you can pry apart your pieces of plastic that got stuck together.
