Magazines load in from the  bottom and usually have a spring feeding them.

Magazines have a spring to feed rounds into the chamber, earlier weapons had in-built magazines which you fed rounds into. Clips exist just to hold rounds together for convenience, you can use a paperclip to hold .22LR rounds.

i made a quick little animation with a Gauntlet i made, the thumb wasn't really cared for so it doesn't look too great in the animation but i should be able to fix that later.
