Edit menu
Link&Materials > Materials
Click "new"
Select the face you want to be that color.
Click "assign."
Use the materials menu to actually change the material.
Materials menu > F5?
Then how do I get the group I made?
edit : whoops, I made a vertex group, not a new material.

The circle things on the handle look un-evenly spaced. also, the blade doesn't go well into the handle and should be a bit bigger. Other than that, the model looks fine.

1. You can hold down ctrl or ctrl+shift to lock to a grid when moving.
2. The blade looks just stuck on, make it look like it curves into the handle at the bottom.
