It's not like I have a computer with Vista on it and I monitor it for security and stuff when an update comes.

You can use any old CD but you need your key.  Kind of like BL.  Only computer per key unless stated otherwise on the box.  For example I have an XP upgrade disk thats good for 3 PCs.

If your computer really really sucks then go ahead and upgrade it totally.


I'm not sure if you can somehow rescue an HDD, heck I don't even know how an HDD can get damaged on the inside.

Well, I got a new computer. Specs:
AMD Phenom X3 2.3GHz
3GB RAM
640GB HDD
ATI Radeon HD 4650
