Author Topic: The new restrictions of Blockland - Blame the abusers.  (Read 4315 times)

I had noticed that too. I checked, and still have the instantRespawn event.

I also still have the instantRespawn event.

In the immortal words of George W. Bush,

"We got some bad intel."

I have no idea why "SetShapeName on player objects is now obfuscated ", or "Player list related clientCmd's are now obfuscated to prevent user tampering". I mean, does that break score hacks? I used to have (all players not in a minigame)'s score be a red "RL X" where X was their reputation level.

If it was a simple matter of exploits, anyone with a decent amount of knowledge like me or Ephi could ruin the game for everyone forever with one month and a half-dozen keys/IPs; the "just remove it entirely if it has an exploit" method doesn't have a good logical extreme, and obfuscating text over a player model approaches that extreme.

I really hope I'm burning a straw man here and it wasn't to prevent impersonation. Otherwise...  :panda:
I mean, holy cannoli, just let me host my freakin' server. Every single update since v9 kills a few more fun things I used to do, presumably to stop some exploit I knew was possible, but never encountered. And I can let it slide with v9 because that was offset by the new wench event system, but 10-12 have had me singin' the blues. Honestly, I'm starting to wonder why Badspot allows any custom scripts or add-ons at all.

Shut up cigarettes.  Every change is for the better.  You'll realize that after several weeks of thinking about it.
LOL, flamebait.
So when you added a mandatory, fixed "Too Far" distance, that was for the better?
And when you locked jet force, even on custom datablocks, that was a good thing how?
And when saying something twice in a row instantly activated flood protection, were you as sure as you are now that there was no way that anything was going to backfire?

There is one thing that isn't gone yet that Lord Tony still managed to figure out how to abuse.

He made an event system that made a few bricks fake kill forever and it pretty much shut off physics server side.  Since physics shut off when there is a mass killing like that happening :|

This is why we don't let Lord Tony on servers.

It is because people have found a way to exploit the game in such a way that two things could happen.

1) Skylord: He was working on a way to break the key-gen system and steal keys. Eventually everyone would have to buy a new one because once he found one that could work with the code, he put it in to make it more accurate to the algorithm.

2) Zoneark & the BLT clan: It had people like Ronin and some others even fooled into thinking it was the real Badspot and kompressor.

This stuff is why we can not have nice things. Because someone has to exploit it and force Badspot to once again go through even more idiot and exploit proofing.

Perhaps some ingame moderation is needed. Rules need to be set and have trusted moderators going through servers, gaining access to the server information, like the local BL_ID and such, and even shutting down such servers.

This way we can keep nice things, and keep the abusers out.

Badspot needs to look closer into how the ID's are used. Zoneark got in by some internet lan thing that made him able to use someone else's IP as his own and use their ID or some other thing to play internet games.

Hamachi, perhaps?

THAT was the program. Yes, that and old unused IDs.

I can understand the need to stop abuse, but removing the feature entirely?

Couldn't we get a bracket system( .setshapename("stuff"); makes your name [stuff] Blockhead) or something?

Either way, we need some ingame rules, and some moderators for both forums and ingame.
Whether or not he decides to pay them, it's a far better solution than just disabling features.

That would make sense in some context, but the thing is Badspot does not like people loving with the shape names, both for aesthetic and security reasons.

That would make sense, when shape names are changed it keeps the players original name, and adds stuff to the front. Bots would get the player name "Bot" that's all we were using it for legitimize uses anyways.

That would forget up the zombie mod because all of the zombies would have a lumbering "BOT" tag over them.

Tom

Then make it only show the [Bot] thing if the shapename has been set.
