Author Topic: Earth Hour  (Read 6580 times)

We had a topic about this a while ago, but I feel the need to entrepreneur  it now because it's on Saturday.

Anyway, on Saturday March 28, 2009, turn of your lights from 8:30-9:30, wherever you live. So it's 8:30 EST, GMT, PST, etc.

My topic. Not yours! D:

This crap again!

What will power the Uncle Sam America speakerphone firework shooter "Real Action" Iwo Jima flag raise 21 gun salute-automatic 12 gauge skeet shooting extravaganza endorsed by Billy Mays?

My sanity?! NO!!

You wanna know the great thing:

It won't do stuff. Just because you turn your lights off doesn't mean the power station isn't still pumping the stuff into your home. You'd have to either A) go and shut off all of your breakers so that the electricity is no longer coming into your house (and possibly risk some things burning out when you turn it back on) or B) call the power company and have them shut the power off for you. Thus making you wait a week before they can turn it back on.

I really don't see the point in this. You know, I was always told that electric power was supposed to be "clean energy". What we should be focusing on is getting the plant that produces to use an alternative source to make it rather than burning fossil fuels.

That still won't help.

I've raged so many mini essays about this stuff so much I'll just leave you with this:
  • Earth Hour does nothing because power plants produce the energy they expect to be used.
  • Energy is not stored in our current energy grid. That is a big part of those GE smart grid commercials you see, but it is still far from an ideal situation.
  • Earth hour encourages the wasting of energy. The population needs to demonstrate a lower average power consumption over time to convince power plants to send out less energy across the lines.
  • Earth Hour was started by a group of eco-cigarettes who do not understand very basic knowledge of our energy system.
  • forget off Earth Hour.

I WILL HOP OFF UV UR *************** band wagon(I wuz nevar on it)

I WILL CELEBRATE EARTH HOUR BITCHES

I don't have to worry about earth hour interfering with ma life, my dad's on the computer 24/7 so he won't do it.

good, more power to use for my 1300W Tagan Piperock PSU

Exactly.

Real solution would be turning off power stations, but I don't think it would be good idea.

I celebrate earth hour because it's like, really peaceful when you try it.

I thought about this when my science teacher was telling us about Earth Hour. I realized that while this would kind of solve a problem, it would be a colossal disaster and a really stupid thing.

Plus it would kind of miss the point that this thing is trying to get across. It's not to save energy, but more to raise awareness about the fact that we need to do something about climate change.

On top of that, people don't choose to have the power plants turned off, this is kind of about making a personal choice to do something about what's going on in the world in a small way

Not to explicitly state this, but the power plants at least in America and Canada function on a grid, where a single power plant doesn't supply power for a block of houses and businesses, but puts the energy into a larger power grid. Because of this, it would be astronomically inconvenient for everyone in the country, but it would also probably be rather costly as well, both in the very act of turning off all the power plants and not breaking something, and the displaced costs of everything screwed up by losing power.

oh stuff

i'll be in a hotel tomorrow
i wonder if they'll turn off the power lol

It am earth day from this edit
