Why people think of "indie-rock" as a genre, I will never know. Indie-rock is not a genre, as the "genre" indie-rock is not associated with any specific sound, it's just people on independent record labels. You wouldn't say that these guys are similar to Modest Mouse, but they're still both considered indie-rock. On the other hand, with actual genres, you could say that DJ Spooky and Byzar are similar, and that's because Illbient is a real genre, unlike indie-rock.
