Author Topic: New Computer  (Read 5417 times)

So, I just started picking out my parts for a new computer. I have experience in replacing computer parts and upgrading them, but I have never built one entirely from ordered parts. Basically, I'm just gonna list them here so that if there are any major compatibility issues, or just suggestions, you guys can voice them. I'm linking to the newegg.com pages, so if you know of a better deal you can tell me.

Okay, let's start the list. For my case, I have chosen the relatively popular Antec 900.

For my GPUs, I have chosen two NVIDIA GTX280s. I know they are very expensive and large, but I have quite a large budget.

For my motherboard, I am thinking about the ASUS Striker II Formula LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard. I have read in the reviews that it can only support four gigabytes of RAM when running two graphics cards with SLI due to chipset restrictions. I have also read that you have to put in two gigabytes of RAM first, and then install Windows Vista 64bit. After that you can put in the rest. Is all of this true?

For my processor, I think I'll go with the Intel Q6600 @2.4 GHz.

For my Power Supply Unit, I have selected the CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply.

For my operating system, I picked Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit.

Here's the RAM.

I'm still browsing for cooling systems, disc drives, and hard drives. I am very open to suggestions, and as I have said earlier, I have a large budget. Also, please tell me if I am missing something very important. I am a newbie to this, after all.

Use a linux distro with AMD64 Architecture.
Also for the processor, Intel is not good when it comes to 64-bit, Get an AMD dual core 64 bit. I have one that clocks out at default at around 3.2 ghz

Vista isn't a good OS at the moment. I found it's clunky, and constricting, not to mention irritating. Most programs don't even work with it, and other programs have serious problems with it. Even then, soon it's going to be replaced by Windows 7.

According to reviews, Windows Vista 64bit is very stable and very good. I myself am currently using Vista 32bit, and I have not had any problems at all.

What exactly is the problem with an intel processor? My friend has one, and it works fine with Vista 64bit.

I've been using Vista 64, too.

My intel processor works fine with 64-bit.

Also I would suggest you just get Windows 7 RC and use it instead.

Ahah Rex you forget, good job with Vista 64-bit.

Rex=inverted?

And do you mean good luck?

Yes.

No. I meant good job selecting 64-bit.

What the hell is the problem with it?

Nothing, I wouldn't take advice from the people on these forums.

Most hardware doesn't have 64-bit drivers.

I'm outdated.
