Small update, my poor management skills have my dwarves pissed because I cooked all their rum. whoops.

Fun fact: According to the forums, if you order as much of either milk or cheese as you can with your points when in careful embark preperations, it ends up all in one barrel when you embark, meaning the entire contents of the barrel all count as one ingredient when cooking, making 57 dorfbuck cow's milk roast[99999] possible even without a legendary cook.

You might have something set up wrong in your DF folder/data/init/init.txt file. Did you download Mayday's pack before putting in the character set I posted? That would fix it I figure. WARNING: The z-level up/down keys switch from < or > to / or * on the numpad with this pack. It makes a few things easier, conflicts with a few minor things but it's a good trade off. You can always switch it back to < or > by going in DF folder/data/init/interface.txt and finding the lines [CURSOR_UP_Z:  and [CURSOR_DOWN_Z: with CTRL + F

Also to build stairs between Z-levels, say, digging down, you need to dig Down staircases on the top level, then Up or Up/Down staircases directly below them. This allows your dwarves to travel between both those Z levels now. Up/Down staircases are both types of staircase built in one so you can simply stack up/down staircases instead of having to set up another up and down staircase adjacent to your other stairs to go down to the next level.

The purple was from me messing up the picture you posted. When I download maydays pack for some reason (even brand new) everything is half as tall as it should be. This is very annoying. Thus I use colten's back

And when I put a down staircase down, notihng at all is underneith it, and it will not let me put an up staircase underneither it. Mind compressing your file and sending it over?

I've genned a new world: Oruthadar Tamun, "The Forever-Planet of Dragons"

hopefully there won't actually be many dragons.

Edit: I'm scared. One of the biomes is "The land of crying"

:o!

I should try this game again. I tried picking it up last summer. I embarked to a region that had a nice range of trees, cliffs and water (with the possibility of some magma). Of course, I get there, and it's completely different from what I thought it was. I'm in a barren wasteland of rock salt. About 10 z-levels down there's an outcropping in the cliff that is slightly forested. The water is a seasonal lake on some other little ledge. I start digging a hole in the side of the mountain. It took too long and I gave up, I hope the stupid dwarves enjoy salt beds and doors made of salt.

I had a bit more luck in adventure mode, throwing pebbles, bones, rocks, worms and severed limbs at my foes.

Even if I still don't get the fortress mode this time around I'm sure I've figured out adventure mode pretty well.

I'm going to go generate a world or two now. I figure I'll make a tiny world for adventure mode.
