It is purposeful exageration. If we just said something like....

Well, it won't be so bad if you don't get a college degree...you will likely earn half as much as you could and most technical careers would be closed to you, as would anything with great benefits like traveling. You could become a teacher or a techie or some other low level position. Burger King is always hiring.....

It wouldn't be as effective, nor as simple as saying "you'll end up cleaning up diarrhea of bathroom stalls".
