I was exploring a little vertical tunnel when I heard faint footsteps.

I turn around slowly and see a creeper staring at me from an almost-impossible-to-see ledge, and nearly shat bricks.

You mean, creepers and maybe skeletons/spiders.

Pigs and other farm animals are stupid, as well as zombies. They will gladly walk off the edge of a mountain.
