how about the exp lost by the player killed is a very small fraction of the exp they earned, the level maybe, say the player earned three bar fulls of exp, he'd drop 3 exp

this number would work depending on how fast level gaining is, it'd probably have to be multiplied and rounded to get a fair amount of exp.

the server lagged as if someone dropped 64 stacks of 64 in one place.

exp is handicapped, if someone died they loose all their accumulated exp. kher died in the server and now the server's lagging because he went on a huge killing spree and gained forgettons of exp. IMO exp should be something that's counted in a number, not as an object that can be dropped.

No, its stupid because it serves no purpose.

In one of the upcoming updates, Notch is going to add more benefits to XP. He didn't  specify what, but he hinted to perks like mining faster, more uses for tools, and maybe a shop to buy exclusive items.
