Why doesn't Minecraft do this anymore?

Watch the begining, the bottom layer of the hole fills up with water, and the hole keeps filling up with water. As far as I know, this doesn't happen anymore in Minecraft.

Notch removed that so that you cannot grief (But in return it seems that it makes griefing easier in some cases)
