Beds are part of the game. 3 wool and three wood planks in crafting table. You use them to set your spawn.

I thought 'shroom biomes were islands.

They are supposed to be, but there are rare cases where they get spliced into shoreline biomes. I used this program with maps to find one in my seed.

I think they changed it in the newest PR
