I usually stick to modpacks like Tekkit classic, Moonquest, and FTB since I usually find standard Minecraft to be boring.

but surviving on motherloving randomly generated floating landmasses?

Fortunately I'm pretty sure Divine RPG adds like 4 different dimensions that are sky islands.

Just download 'Better World Generation 4' from the minecraft forums.
It has an option to spawn in a sky dimension.

I see it as the nether being sandwiched between the overworld and the end, as all worlds are essentially infinite planes.
